A prominent businessman, who flaunts his wealth openly and stole the Durban July spotlight this year, is behind bars facing charges of corruption, fraud, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Yesterday Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, said the businessman was also arrested for being an illegal immigrant.

“He was aware that he was being investigated. He then called an immigration officer to have a meeting with him on Friday. He attempted to bribe him with R40 000 but at the same time a Hawks operation was underway. He was then arrested on the spot,” said Mulaudzi.

Home Affairs spokesperson, David Hlabane, said the businessman will appear in the Witbank magistrate’s court tomorrow.

The businessman who owns a helicopter and more than 70 trucks, caused a stir ahead of the Durban July this year when he took to social media to show off his vehicles worth millions.

His fleet included a Mercedes Benz G wagon, an A-class AMG, a Vito bus, a Porsche and many others.

At the time some people had mixed feelings, questioning his wealth. He responded that he was making his money from his logistics business which was registered since 2014.

He told Power FM: “I started working with trucks and I can say that’s when I started loving them. He [employer] also gave me an opportunity to be a truck driver. I was then promoted and I went from being a truck driver to working in an office – I was working in a control room.”

Hlabane said the department tipped off the Hawks on the basis of Home Affairs’ investigation of his status in the country.
