President Jacob Zuma has declared a special provincial official funeral for the late musician and legendary composer Ray Phiri, who passed away last week.

Zuma said this category of funeral was designated by the president for distinguished people.

Phiri died at the age of 70 at a Mpumalanga hospital on July 12 after succumbing to lung cancer.

Zuma has instructed that the national flag be flown at half-mast in Mpumalanga on Saturday, the day of his funeral.

The president extended his deepest condolences to the Phiri family, describing the legend’s death as a “sad loss”.

Phiri was the founding member of the Cannibals in the 1970s and went on to found the popular band Stimela.

He is also the recipient of the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver for his sterling contribution to the South African music industry and to the liberation struggle.

Phiri’s memorial service will be held at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit this Thursday.
