Cryptocurrency: Is this money, an asset or a get rich quick scheme?

When the City of Joburg reported a breach of its network on Thursday night and shut down its website and all e-services, it was because it had received a ransom demand from a group calling itself the Shadow Kill Hackers.

What did they want? A ransom of 4.0 bitcoins (about R436 840) to be paid by Monday at 5pm.

But what exactly is cryptocurrency? Is it something we should be investing in and if so how do we do it?
