A three-year-old girl escaped death when a train drove over her at Manqulo Village near Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said today.

Captain Jackson Manatha said Amahle Sihulufunda was found lying injured but alive on a railway line yesterday.

Manatha said the train driver saw the little girl lying between the railway tracks but could not stop immediately and drove over her. However, she survived because she was small enough to fit under the train as it flew over her.

“She had some slight injuries and was found with oil and grease on her. She was alive but looked sick as she had slept on the railway line the whole night.”

She was taken to Komga Hospital where she was treated and discharged, he said.

He said Amahle and five friends went from home to home asking for gifts on Christmas Day.

As the friends walked back home, she lagged behind. She eventually landed up falling asleep between railway tracks.

Her friends were not aware that she was not behind them.

Amahle was reported missing when she did not return home.

Manatha said the train travels between East London and Mthatha.
