2019 was a great year for many of our local artists who achieved acclaim proving that what we have to offer musically is something the world is after.
One of those artists is Ami Faku. We first came across the budding songstress during her time on The Voice SA, where she made it to the top 16.
Since then she’s released her hit single, Into Ingawe, featuring Sun-El Musician, which received a gold plaque, and bagged the coveted Apple Music New Artist Spotlight.
Faku was in her vocal bag when she made Imali, which peaked at number one on Apple Music pre-order.
Although the entire album is a soothing body of work, Ubuhle Bakho remains my favourite. Faku’s sultry voice, paired with heartfelt lyrics, will really have you drunk texting your crush at midnight. -Moroetsana Serame

Youngsta CPT didn't trail far behind having dropped off 3T which is among the best hip-hop albums to have been released in 2019. He even got AKA to rap on the breakout hit, Main Ous. Listen to the album on Apple Music or Spotify.
Other notable artiststs include Kid Tini should be commended for his collaboration with a Styles P and Stogie T, Get Money.
Maphorisa also did damage with his Scorpion offering, which enjoyed a healthy-sized impact on the local club scene. Limpopo Champions League came out last year, and Sho Madjozi kept the momentum going this year with the viral hit John Cena that he even posted on his social media and used it as his arena entry song.
Prince Kaybee and Msaki’s Fetch your Life as well as Gugulethu, had a good run on the airwaves. Tshego dropped a song with King Monada called No Ties which seems to have been a hit with the streets.
Samthing Soweto also pushed it with his Isphithiphithi project despite his suspect performance on the Idols finale.
Lady Zamar dropped an album, Monarch, that perhaps didn’t do as well as projected but was still a stellar listen. Tellaman, Nasty C and Shekhinah came together for Whipped for what turned out to be a love-filled pop song.
Nasty C struck gold again, his Ivyson tour which saw him take his sound to the people. -Phumlani Sithebe
While some songs may have you shooting your shot, others, like Faith Nketsi’s EP, will tragically have you catching stray bullets.
Her rapping debut is titled Disrespectful, which really lives up to its name. The seven-track waste of data is guaranteed to damage your auditory nerves with bars like: “All my girls fly yeah, no ostrich.”
The worst song on the EP was Mood, which sounded like a dirty nursery rhyme accompanied by lazy, flat vocals. Khabonina Qubeka’s Wax It really walked so that Nketsi could fly. Listen to the EP on Apple Music or Spotify. -Moroetsana Serame
