We got down, we turned up and we put it loud. Here are #Trending’s picks of the music that made our year:

BANGER OF THE YEAR

Davido: If

Afropop sensation Davido’s February single If had us jamming like we were all Nigerian. This cute, supercatchy love song with Pidgin lyrics shot to number one on the Nigerian charts and soon became a hit all over Africa. The video currently has 54 million views on YouTube. It’s just a pity it got a remix featuring serial sex offender R Kelly – gross!

INTERNATIONAL BANGER OF THE YEAR

Cardi B: Bodak Yellow

There’s no denying it, Miss Cardi’s Bronx banger had the whole world chanting “I don’t gotta dance/ I make money move”. From the US to South Africa, every speaker has pumped stripper-turned-star Belcalis Almanzar’s (her real name) anthem. For those of you who are wondering why Bad and Boujee’s not on here – that was 2016!

SEXIEST SONG:

DJ Maphorisa featuring DJ Tira, Busiswa and Moonchild Sanelly: Midnight Starring Summer hit Midnight Starring has had everyone bouncing in the club. Busiswa rocks this tune, and DJ Maphorisa adds another addition to the gqom wave taking over the nation. Brows on fleek!

DJ Khaled featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller: Wild Thoughts
Rihanna doesn’t even have to say real words any more. Wild Thoughts, with its Carlos Santana guitar riffs and sensual Spanish flavour, had us all hypnotised this year.

PARTY STARTER OF THE YEAR

Bhizer featuring Busiswa, SC Gorna and Bhepepe: Gobis’iqolo
This gqom track with its infectious intro will start any party. The video is South Africa’s most watched music video of the year, and we’d like to award this track our “Twerk single of the year” award too.

ROAD TRIP SINGLE

Sun-El Musician featuring Samthing Soweto: Akanamali
It’s that track that made you lean back in your seat and unwind as you took the long road. What other song but Akanamali could get this award?

SURPRISE HIT

Killer Kau featuring Mbali: Tholukuthi Hey!
It started with Grade 11 pupil Sakhile Hlatshwayo (rap moniker Killer Kau) saying the words “tholukuthi hey!” to a beat in his bedroom, and ended as one of South Africa’s surprise hits. Euphonik saw the video on Twitter and turned the riff into a track, and now it even has its own video featuring young singer Mbali Sikwane.

SURPRISE HIT (INTERNATIONAL)

Big Shaq: Man’s Not Hot As we mentioned in our editorial, onomatopoeia was all the rage this year, and nothing encapsulated that like English rapper, actor and comedian Big Shaq’s Man’s Not Hot. From taxi ranks to rooftops, we were all shouting: “Skrrrah! Papapa!”

EARWORM OF THE YEAR

Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee: Despacito
Don’t write it down because it’s going to stick in your head for the rest of the day! Despacito and its later version featuring Justin Bieber undoubtedly goes down as the earworm of the year. Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You and Bruno Mars’ That’s What I Like also deserves a mention. – Grethe Kemp
