William Kentridge had another massive year with his The Head & the Load theatrical music piece, which premiered against the backdrop of the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, described as his “most ambitious to date”.
South Africa’s Gabi Ngcobo became a curator at one of the biggest art events of the year – the Berlin Biennale – and Cape Town artist Lady Skollie’s fierce feminist works were displayed at the Tyburn Gallery in London.

Zanele Muholi, the visual activist and queer photographer, continued her path of becoming a household name in art across the planet. This year, among her other achievements, she was awarded France’s premier cultural award, the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. The school she attended and which paved her way – with so many other top local photographers – The Market Photo Workshop – received the R1.75 million 2018 Principal Prince Claus Award by the royal family of the Netherlands in December.
