With two weeks to go before Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr has the last fight of his boxing career, he has set tongues rolling with how he is preparing for the bout.
Mayweather ducks the ropes for his 49th professional bout against Andre Berto at MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 12. At stake will be Mayweather’s World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association welterweight titles, as well as his perfect record.
A win will enable him to equal Rocky Marciano’s unblemished record of 49-0.
The man nicknamed Money because of his penchant for displaying his riches publicly did something in keeping with his name at his public workout this week.
Every fighter works a punching bag in preparation for a big fight, but only Mayweather would think to do it while holding a massive stack of cash.
“I need motivation; let me hold it while I’m training,” he said on Instagram this week as he grabbed the cash. The clip can be viewed on YouTube.
Last week he flaunted his wealth by showing off a new flashy sports car, the Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita, which costs a cool $4.8 million (R63 million).
As he prepares for his upcoming bout with Berto, Mayweather has also revealed “the king sleeps good every night, from head to toe” as he gave fans a glimpse into his life away from the ring.
Along with glimpses of how he steps up his training regime before a fight, Mayweather also posted a series of snaps on Instagram posing on a bed.
At heart, he remains one of the finest defensive boxing talents in history. He held fans spellbound during an open training session this week as he slipped punches with ease against several sparring partners at his Mayweather Boxing Club.
His workout, also captured on YouTube, set Twitter buzzing with comments from spectators, most of them saying Mayweather would be missed when he hung up his gloves.
One commentator praised the way the champion threw body shots during sparring, saying the 38-year-old must have been “a beast when he was younger”, judging by the way he hit the punching bag.
