South Africa’s golfing hero Ernie “Big Easy” Els will be designing a new signature golf course in Zanzibar for what will be East Africa’s first signature golf resort.

The announcement was made on Friday by Els at OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park. The new course is part of an agreement with Zanzibar Amber Resort. The construction of the top-class course – which will include the state-of-the-art resort – is due to begin this year with its completion earmarked for 2020.

The project is expected to cost a cool $2 billion (R28 billion).

The stunning new development is located on the northeast of the Zanzibar Archipelago, a small cluster of islands renowned for their outstanding natural beauty.

“As a course designer, I feel so fortunate to be working with Zanzibar Amber Resorts,” says Els. “And to be awarded with some of the most beautiful settings along the Indian Ocean is really wonderful for us.”

Els said the new course would give players an opportunity to compete at the highest level on a great course, as well as to enjoy Africa’s great atmosphere by playing on an island.
