Devastated fans pay tribute to ‘phenomenal, very talented’ Jantjie

As news of the death of Free State Stars winger Sinethemba Jantjie filtered through, the football community and fans took to social media to express their devastation at his death.

According to a statement that was released by the club earlier today, Jantjie was involved in a motor vehicle accident on Monday morning in Bethlehem.

Details surrounding the crash are unknown at this stage, and funeral and memorial arrangements are still to be decided. Jantjie was 30 years old.

“The PSL conveys its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Sinethemba Jantjie during this difficult moment,” the PSL said.

The Bidvest Wits management, staff and players offered their condolences to the family, friends, teammates and Free State Stars FC, saying that they learn of his passing with “great sadness”.

After signing a pre-contract with Bidvest Wits in January, Jantjie was due to start his journey with the Clever Boys from July 1.

Fans took to social media to mourn the loss of one of South Africa’s football stars.

“As football fans we’re sad about Sinethemba Jantjie’s passing. We all thought one day he’ll play for one of the ‘big teams’ and represent the nation with the green and gold. Heavens are open for you number 11,” said one.

Others paid tribute to a “phenomenal and a very talented young man”.

The Premier Soccer League will be observing a moment of silence for Jantjie, from Monday until Sunday, at the Absa Premiership, National First Division and Multichoice Diski fixtures.
