Bidvest Wits’ early collection of points has put them in a good position to win the league. And on Friday the Premier Soccer League announced that they had become the first team to win the Premiership Quarterly Q-Innovation.
Each team that wins a quarter receives R1.5 million in prize money.
The Clever Boys managed to earn the points when it mattered the most: early on in the season they beat all the big teams. They started with Kaizer Chiefs, beating them 3-1 at FNB Stadium in August, then beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 a week later.
But Wits coach Gavin Hunt says they didn’t aim to get points from the big guns; they simply wanted to get points from everyone they played against.
In the current 2018/19 first quarter, five clubs were tied on 14 points behind Wits’ 16 points. Mamelodi Sundowns won three fixtures and drew five during the same period; Pirates had four victories, two losses and two draws; and Polokwane City, SuperSport United and Bloemfontein Celtic were also in the mix but they couldn’t clear the last hurdle.
Wits will look to summit the table again when they take on Celtic tomorrow in an Absa Premiership match at Bidvest Stadium.
Both teams have stubborn defence and had conceded the fewest goals in the PSL this season. Wits conceded four goals and Celtic let in five.
The Clever Boys have scored 14 goals, making them one of the highest scoring teams. They sit at position two with 20 points, two behind league leaders Pirates.
On the other hand Siwelele have managed to score just nine goals but they are hot on the heels of the Braamfontein side, with only three points separating them.
Hunt said Steve Komphela’s charges will be motivated to get maximum points against Wits because they had a chance of catching them.
