Great players, poor coaches

The great Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona, Hristo Stoichkov, Roy Keane and even Jomo Sono have one thing in common: they were great players, but proved to be disastrous coaches.

Maradona, who captained Argentina to the 1986 World Cup championship, will go down in the history books as one of the most talented players to excel on the pitch but fail miserably when it was time to showcase managerial abilities.

The Argentine legend failed to transform his playing talent to the dugout when he was called to lead his native country.

His contract was not renewed after the humiliating 4-0 loss to Germany in the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Locally, Sono is regarded as one of the best players in the country, but his coaching credentials tell a different story. Under his leadership, Jomo Cosmos have been in and out of the Absa Premiership.

Stoichkov is another legend who kept supporters captivated with his left foot when he starred for Bulgaria.

He was the joint top scorer at the 1994 World Cup. He also has four Liga titles and a European Cup with Barcelona.

However, he has failed in the technical area.

He first failed to guide Bulgaria to the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008, and followed that up with a disastrous short stint at Celta Vigo before the club was relegated.

He also failed at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Former Manchester United midfielder Keane is another one who has flopped on the touchlines.

The Irishman won seven Premier League titles and a Champions League crown during his successful 12-year spell at Old Trafford.

He was touted as Alex Ferguson’s heir apparent when he hung up his boots, but he has not lived up to the expectations.

He was fired by Ipswich Town, but the squad were not able to challenge for the promotion places and he was sacked in the middle of his second term.
