Some of the headlines in the Sport section this week:

Baxter: I’d like to see us there – on top

A stable defence has largely contributed to Kaizer Chiefs’ consistent run this season.

Daniel Mothowagae analyses the team through the eyes of the club’s goalkeeper coach Lee Baxter

“JZ” has a lot to prove in the Bucs hot seat

Let’s talk about Josef “JZ” Zinnbauer and his record.

Aowa! The new Orlando Pirates coach’s CV doesn’t inspire confidence at all and I tend to agree with those who have doubts if the German mentor is the right man for the Bucs hot seat, writes Timothy Molobi.

Palacios’ advice to Bucs’ new man

While congratulating the newly appointed coach Zinnbauer, veteran Augusto Palacios offers wise counsel about the pressure involved and fans’ expectation.

Cricket World Cup flop ‘CEO, board’s doing’

Thabang Moroe and Cricket SA’s board appear to be directly responsible for the circumstances that led to the poor performance of the Proteas at the World Cup.

This is according to a report released by the team’s brains trust after the World Cup.

Smith’s appointment leaves more questions

Now that CSA finally has its director of cricket, there seem to be more questions than answers.

The courtship of former Proteas captain Graeme Smith for the role began as far back as August, but now that he has “signed” four months later, it’s difficult to work out whether the chase has been worth it.

Nkwe in agreement with demotion  Smith

The newly appointed director of cricket at Cricket SA, former Proteas captain Graeme Smith, began his tenure by hiring old team-mate Mark Boucher as head coach and installing interim coach Enoch Nkwe as his assistant.

Smith spoke to City Press about what he hoped to achieve in his three-month stint in charge.

A troubled relationship played out in El Clasico

Real Madrid and Barcelona have a rivalry that goes far beyond football. It is steeped in the Spanish Civil War, in Francoism and, now, in the quest for Catalan independence.

In fact, Catalan independence is the reason that the first El Clásico of the season is being played at Camp Nou, the home stadium of Barcelona, on Wednesday.

Pint-sized Kopo walks tall behind the scenes

The story of the SA Under-23 team’s recent qualification for next year’s Olympic Games in Japan is incomplete if nothing is mentioned about the team’s unsung heroes.

And among the unheralded is head coach David Notoane’s lieutenant, Kwanele Kopo of SuperSport United.

Roc Nation deal will see Siya’s story go global

Not long after Siya Kolisi became the Springboks’ first black captain. Last year, the Gwijo Squad introduced his name into the lyrics of an old song.

Said song went: “UKolisi lo, abamaziyo, abazange bambona!”

As baffling as this translation seems, it basically says the name Kolisi is so mythical that it has reached places where even those who have never seen him know him – a bit like Nelson Mandela when he was in jail.
