The wait is almost over...

The 2019/20 Absa Premiership season is nearly upon us, kicking off with a number of mouth-watering encounters on Saturday.

See City Press Sports Editors prediction on who will win the league, the also rans and who are the relegation candidates.

African football’s bleak week

In a horrible week for African football, two officials were handed long-term bans by Fifa. Former Botswana Football Association general secretary Mooketsi Kgotlele was banned for life “for taking bribes linked to convicted match-fixer Wilson Perumal” while former Liberian Football Association president Musa Bility was banned for 10 years.

This came hot on the heels of last week’s blow that saw the CAF being put under “administration” by Fifa, which has now assigned its Senegalese secretary-general, Fatma Samoura, as a “Fifa general delegate for Africa” for six months.

Despite fraught search for a coach, Kings remain hopeful

Southern Kings chairperson Loyiso Dotwana is convinced that, despite a turbulent recruitment process for a head coach, the Pro14 franchise should still emerge with a good candidate to replace Deon Davids for the new season, which begins at the end of September.

Fond farewell to football’s big stars

When the top European leagues begin playing in the next few weeks, some big-name players will be missing after announcing their retirement from the beautiful game.

Among the many superstars calling it quits are goalkeepers Iker Casillas and Petr Cech, though, for the Spanish World Cup winner, the decision was “forced” on him after he suffered a heart attack during training.

Time to review SA football – Jordaan

The president of Safa returned from Egypt last week, where he was elected as CAF’s third vice-president.

He speaks about a range of issues including Stuart Baxter’s future, the national teams, Safa going forward, CAF, Bafana’s “back-door” qualification and calls for the Safa executive to resign:

On Stuart Baxter:

“The coach will meet with the Safa technical committee this week and give them his report. His report, plus the input from the technical committee, will then be presented to the national executive committee [NEC] meeting in August.”
