Fabian McCarthy issues instructions to inmates before taking them through a drill

The football grounds of Krugersdorp Correctional Services Centre were full of life on Wednesday.

A ring of orange formed by the distinct uniform of inmates seated along the perimeter fence along the West Rand prison added colour to the event.

They were all glued to the action on the belly of the lush green and perfectly trimmed pitch, where their fellow inmates were huffing and puffing from gruelling football drills across the huge field.

The initiative is the brainchild of former professional boxer-turned-pastor Clete Stevis, through his non-profit organisation Humanitarian Empowerment Fund (HEF).

Stevis has teamed up with former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Fabian McCarthy, who is the coordinator of sports events for the HEF.

Stevis and McCarthy said their mission was to help rehabilitate inmates and the programme would culminate in a team being selected from Krugersdorp to play against other prisons.
