Nedbank Cup first draw sees 10 Absa Premiership clubs go head to head

This year’s Nedbank Cup draw saw 10 Absa Premiership clubs being paired against each other – meaning at least five top clubs will not make the last 16 of the tournament.

But there could be more casualties as the tournament is known for its giant-killing exploits by lower division clubs.

While the focus is on the Tshwane derby when Mamelodi Sundowns take on neighbours SuperSport United, the most intriguing fixture would be between defending champions TS Galaxy and Chippa United.

This will see Dan Malesela going back to his former club – Chippa – hoping to use them as a step ladder to the next round in their quest to defend their title.

TS Galaxy shocked everyone last year when they defeated favourites Kaizer Chiefs in the final.

The last 16 draw on Thursday night also pitted Limpopo rivals – Baroka FC and Polokwane City - against each other.

Interestingly, the two struggling sides will meet in a league clash this weekend. They are both languishing at the bottom of the table with Baroka at the tail end and City just two places above them on 14th spot.

Another intriguing fixture will see Orlando Pirates at home to Bidvest Wits while Chiefs face Glad Africa Championship team Royal Eagles.

Other fixtures involving top flight clubs will see Stellenbosch playing Maritzburg United and Bloemfontein Celtic hosting AmaZulu.

In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
