Netball SA president Cecilia Molokwane has tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus after her recent business trips to the UK and Scotland, the organisation announced on Tuesday afternoon.
“Molokwane had early this month travelled to the UK for meetings with the International Netball Federation where she serves as a board member.
“These meetings took place as South Africa is gearing to host the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town,” said Netball SA in a statement.
According to Molokwane, she found out she was positive on Tuesday morning following tests.
“I found out this morning that I have tested positive for the coronavirus,” she said.
“I did these tests following my return from the UK. I would also like to mention that when we returned from the UK, we were screened at OR Tambo international and everything went well.”
Molokwane said she was in quarantine and was currently not showing any symptoms.
“I am currently in quarantine and taking all the necessary precautions to make sure that I recover fully from this virus,” she said. “I am not showing any symptoms, however I will still take precautions to protect everyone around me and myself.”
Molokwane urged the nation to “take all necessary precautions” adding that “this virus is real and we need to treat it as such”.
Netball SA spokesperson Nnusi Gazi told City Press that Molokwane had left the country “at the end of last month and early this month” to attend the meetings abroad.
“She was gone for about a week. She returned on March 7 where she was screened at the airport where she was told that everything was fine,” he said.
“Because she had been out of the country Molokwane decided to go test last week and she then received her results back this morning at 11.20.”
Gazi added that the president had not been in contact with the Proteas players.
“There haven’t been any netball activities, so she has not interacted with any of the players,” she said
South Africa is set to host the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town, the first in Africa in 50 years.
The Proteas capped off a memorable season by scooping four prestigious awards from the six they were nominated for at the annual SA Sport Awards in Durban last year.
The team walked away with team of the year and federation of the year awards, and the cherry on top was when Molokwane, scooped the sport administrator of the year award.
