Netball SA president Cecilia Molokwane has recovered from the Covid-19 coronavirus two weeks after testing positive following a series of business trips to the UK and Scotland.
“She has been in quarantine as per instructions by her medical doctor and has since gone back to retest,” Netball SA said in a statement on Sunday morning.
“The results came back on Saturday, April 4, and the president has now tested negative.”
Upon her return to the country following meetings with heads of various sports federations including the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa, Molokwane was “screened at the airport where she was told everything was fine”.
However she subsequently took the decision to get tested and her results were positive.
“Following my results, both my medical doctor Sam Manthata and MEC for Health in Limpopo Dr Phophi Ramathuba recommended that I be in quarantine for at least two weeks before I can retest again,” she said.
Molokwane said although the task of self-quarantining was a daunting one, it was essential and necessary.
“It is such an exhausting exercise, however it’s worth it to be self-quarantined for my sake and the sake of those close to you,” she said.
“I have a three-year-old daughter and not being able to even give her a hug is a nightmare. One needs to be self-disciplined because the virus doesn’t move, however people do.”
Molokwane – who now joins the more than 40 people in the country who have recovered from the virus – confirmed that none of the people she interacted with upon her return from the UK had tested positive.
The news of Molokwane’s recovery coincided with the announcement by Heath Minister Zweli Mkhize that South Africa has now recorded 1 585 confirmed Covid-19 cases and nine deaths as of day nine of a national lockdown enforced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.
Molokwane has urged the country to take the pandemic “seriously”.
“This virus is serious,” she said.
“I see people not taking it seriously and it worries me. I will continue with my family to adhere to the precautions and the lockdown.”
