After missing out on the coach of the month award, Baroka FC’s Kgoloko Thobejane will be hoping to at least land the Q-Innovation quarter one award.
Standing between Baroka and their maiden accolade are SuperSport United, who are three games behind.
Baroka lead the standings after eight games on 16 points. That could be enough to win them the award, which goes to a club with the most points after every quarter.
But they will have to wait a bit longer before finding out if they will walk away with the R1.5 million prize.
Only United have a chance of surpassing Baroka’s points tally – if they win the three games they have in hand.
After handing Golden Arrows their first defeat of the season on Tuesday night, with a 3-0 score, United are on 10 points after five games and need to win at least two of their remaining three.
But their involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup means they will only complete their first-round games in December.
They will play a two-legged cup final against TP Mazembe after the international week. The first leg is scheduled for November 18 in Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the second tie will happen a week later at home.
This means their scheduled league game against Polokwane City on November 25 will have to be postponed.
They are poised to host Ajax Cape Town between the two finals on November 22, but it is unclear if this game will continue as scheduled.
PSL media liaison officer Luxolo September said: “We are waiting for SuperSport United to play the full quota of eight matches before releasing the final log.”
Last month, Thobejane lost the coach of the month award to Golden Arrows’ mentor Clinton Larsen, leading to an outcry that he was the most deserving coach.
But he might be rewarded for his side’s good run in the opening matches.
