Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane has hinted at retiring from club football at 60.
This came in the midst of a revelation by the 55-year-old that he was yet to sign a new contract despite guiding the Brazilians to their latest trophy, the Telkom Knockout on Saturday – the ninth title in his seven-year spell with the Tshwane club.
“We were talking but we haven’t reached an agreement,” disclosed Mosimane shortly after Sundowns overcame Maritzburg United 2-1 to lift the R4 million trophy at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“I think I want to stay. But at the moment, there’s no agreement.
“But I hope we’ll find an agreement. What I know is Sundowns want me to stay, and what I know is I want to stay. So we need to agree on staying.”
“It’s the very first time I’m in this position. I’ve been here for seven years [and] I’ve had two contracts and there was never an issue. And I have always signed anytime, any day.
“And I don’t think you’ve heard before of me stalling in contract [negotiations] whatsoever.
“I am 55 and I want to go at 60. This is a too stressful job. So it’s my last contract and I think it might be worth it.”
During his spell with the defending league champions so far, Mosimane has guided the Tshwane powerhouse to four Absa Premiership titles, two Telkom Knockouts and the Nedbank Cup, while he also delivered the CAF Champions League and the Super Cup to Chloorkop.
The former Bafana Bafana tactician is hopeful that his relationship with the club will continue, with him going as far as saying “there’s no rush especially when we all want to be together”.
“I love Mamelodi Sundowns, the supporters love me and they want me to say; and I want to stay.
“And the club has approached me to say ‘coach do you want to stay?’ So we love each other.
“Of course we would have liked to settle out as early as possible so that if I’m not here, Sundowns can continue. And also, if I’m not here, I must also continue with life,” he said as a matter of fact.
As for his next life in the game, Mosimane said youth football was his other passion.
“That’s where I want to go. My legacy is not all about trophies.”
