Kagiso Rabada once again tops the nomination lists for Cricket South Africa’s annual awards with at least four nominations.
The number one ranked Test bowler in the world, Rabada could potentially scoop six awards at the glittering awards ceremony to be held on June 2 at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Rabada has been nominated for the prestigious SA cricketer of the year, Standard Bank Test cricketer of the year, Standard Bank ODI cricketer of the year, and the RAM delivery of the year.
He also has the potential to secure the SA player’s player of the year award as well as the SA fans’ cricketer of the year, which are done by voting.
This is the second time the 22-year-old has been nominated for the four awards after he scooped six awards, the most a Protea player has ever received, at the 2016 ceremony.
He was also the youngest player to be awarded the SA cricketer of the year.
Rabada has been nominated in the premier award category alongside newcomer Aiden Markram, who has also been nominated for the Test cricketer of the year and international newcomer of the year.
Another of the Proteas young guns, Lungi Ngidi, was nominated for newcomer of the year and for the delivery of the year, while his domestic performances was also recognised in the category of RAM Slam T20 challenge cricketer of the season.
The other contenders for SA cricketer of the year include AB de Villiers, Dean Elgar and Vernon Philander.
Ismail and Van Niekerk also scoop four nominations
Protea women’s fast bowler, Shabnim Ismail, was also nominated in four categories namely SA women’s cricketer of the year, ODI women’s cricketer of the year, T20 women’s cricketer of the year and SA women’s players’ player of the year.
The Proteas captain Dane van Niekerk was also nominated in the above four categories while teenage sensation Laura Wolvaardt was nominated in three.
Convener of the CSA awards judging panel, Aslam Khota, said that the awards were always tough to judge especially due to the stiff nature of the competition.
“The judging panel was impressed by the overall performances during the season of the nominees in the various categories,” Khota added.
If Rabada takes home the SA cricketer of the year he will be in the illustrious company of Makhaya Ntini, Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla and De Villiers who have all won the award twice.
