Banyana Banyana was awarded a R2.4 million bonus by the South African Football Association (Safa) for the team’s performance at the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) and qualifying for Fifa Women’s World Cup.

The Banyana Banyana bonus saga with the players has been settled, Safa acting chief executive Russell Paul told City Press yesterday.

“The players are happy and the matter has been settled. Everything was addressed at a press conference on Friday,” said Paul from Cape Town, where he attended the team’s international friendly game against the Netherlands in the inaugural Winnie Mandela Challenge.

The interim Safa accounting officer added that the outstanding monies were deposited on Friday as promised. This statement was backed by a few players whom City Press spoke to.

At the heart of the matter was the outstanding monies from the R2.4 million bonus that was promised to the players for finishing second at the CAF Women’s Cup of Nations in Ghana late last year.

Stories of an unhappy camp broke this week in the team’s build-up to yesterday’s game. Some senior players made their displeasure known after the team was only paid a portion of what was due to them.

They had accused Safa of disrespect and were unhappy with the federation’s lack of communication in addressing the issue.

Safa had initially made a commitment to pay over the outstanding funds by early next month, but had to fast-track the transactions to avert potential disruptions.

Banyana is also preparing to face Sweden in the maiden Albertina Sisulu Challenge on Tuesday at the Cape Town Stadium. Kickoff takes place at 7pm.
