Liverpool were in rampant mood once again at Anfield as they swept aside Watford 5-0 in today’s English Premier League clash, with Mohamed Salah producing a superstar display scoring four goals.
The hosts took the lead inside the first five minutes as Salah continued his deadly form. After being played in, down the right-hand side in the final third, the Egyptian burst beyond Miguel Britos before slotting past Orestis Karnezis into the bottom-right corner.
That was 33 goals in all competitions for the winger as he equalled Fernando Torres’ record from 2007/08 for a player in a debut campaign.
It was largely one-way traffic for the Merseyside team, even though it took until the 39 minute before the next chance arrived. After James Milner sent the lively Salah clear down the left, the 25-year-old picked out Roberto Firmino, who showed deftness of touch with a back-heel to create a shooting chance.
From his shot, Karnezis was forced to turn the ball over the bar. Nonetheless, Jürgen Klopp’s side soon got their reward as Salah surpassed Torres’ record to complete his brace.
Following another superb raid down the left-hand side by Andrew Robertson, the full-back hit an accurate cross which the Pharaohs’ ace tucked home with customary composure in minute 43.
Six minutes later Firmino got in on the act as he profited from Salah’s cross from the right-hand side. Using his back-heel and quick reflexes, he deflected the ball home much to the delight of the home supporters.
After the interval the Hornets showed courage in trying to find a way back and came close on two occasions. In the 51st minute José Holebas drove forwards on the left before sending a rocket just wide of a scrambling Loris Karius.
Two minutes later Javi Gracia’s men were inches away as Roberto Pereyra just missed. When Joe Gomez brought down Richarlison outside the area, Pereyra saw his free-kick strike the woodwork with Karius stranded.
With that said, the hosts were relentless and it was the country of Egypt to be proud. In the 77 minute Sadio Mané drove forward and offloaded to Salah in the area. Using the kind of skill Lionel Messi is known for, he tucked home under incredible pressure with his left foot.
Amazingly, the diminutive Egyptian scored his fourth in the 85th minute as Liverpool ran riot. After playing in Danny Ings for a strike on goal, Karnezis saved but the rebound fell to Reds’ goal-machine as he rifled home into the roof of the net.
The victory sees the Reds cement their position in the top four as they eased past Tottenham Hotspur into third place.
