Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has called the ongoing 2017/2018 football season “awkward”.
Speaking at the Premier Soccer League head office in Parktown on Wednesday after he and Masandawana striker, Percy Tau, were announced as coach and player of the month for April, Mosimane said this season was akward because at some point PSL rookies, Baroka FC, were leading the league.
“Every league has its own story and this one I call it ‘the awkward season’. Not difficult, but awkward. You did not know who was coming or winning,” he said.
“It was a funny one, you know, where a big team like SuperSport United being where it is [14th on the log] and where Bidvest Wits [last season’s champions] were second from the bottom. For about three or four months they couldn’t come out. You had Baroka [who] was on top of the log, if you remember, in November, Maritzburg was first or second at one stage, Free State Stars was second or first.”
“So it was that kind of an awkward season, you guys [the media] were debating saying it was a difficult season, some were saying it’s an easy season because the big guns didn’t come to the party.”
The Kagiso-born coach said that even the so-called small clubs were up to it.
He said he doesn’t think any team will match the record of most points in a 16-team PSL season, set by his team in 2016.
“I don’t know if there is anybody that can match that in the next five or 10 years.”
Sundowns broke the record in the 2013-2014 season with 65 points, before Kaizer Chiefs set a new record in the 2014-2015 campaign with 69 points. However, the Brazilians set a new record with 71 points in 2016. Bafana baStyle won 22 of their 31 Absa Premiership encounters, scoring 55 goals and conceding only 20.
