Here are some of the headlines in your City Press Sport section today:
Bafana have no reason to miss the (Afcon) boat this time
The ramifications of Bafana Bafana failing to qualify for yet another major tournament will be huge.
South Africa faces Libya in a more than do-or-die Afcon qualifier at a neutral venue in Tunisia tonight, hoping to bury the ghosts of 2017, when Bafana missed out on the continental championships in Gabon.
South Africa had promised so much in their Afcon qualifying campaign, only to find themselves with a knife at the throat in their final group game.
Downs’ CAF run presents another headache for premier league
Mamelodi Sundowns were on Friday due to submit a comprehensive proposal to the PSL to have the club’s remaining Absa Premiership fixtures rejigged.
This is in the wake of The Brazilians’ looming domestic and continental fixture clash as a consequence of coach Pitso Mosimane’s team reaching the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.
Sundowns will face Al Ahly of Egypt over two legs, the dates of which fall on the same weekend as the South African champions’ upcoming PSL fixtures against SuperSport United and Baroka FC next month.
Meet golf’s new kid on the block
A new name dropped into the top 50 of the official world golf ranking this past week, and it belongs to a golfer with a cheeky, lopsided grin and a pair of blue eyes that are themselves now trying to see just how far this little journey is going to go.
If history is anything to go by, Justin Harding should brace himself for quite an exciting adventure or trip.
Time’s running out for Ekstein, but he could still bloom
Someone recently posted on one of the social media platforms that Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker has been a promising player for a decade now.
Another player headed in that direction, in my view, is Hendrick Pule Ekstein. Excuse me for being a phlegmatic, grumpy old man, but I don’t understand the hype about this underperformer.
Siwela set to hoist the SA flag abroad
While most South African match officials have been twiddling their thumbs during this Fifa international week, assistant referee Zakhele Siwela will be flying the country’s flag high.
On Tuesday, Siwela will be running the line in a friendly match between Morocco and Argentina at the Grand Stade de Tanger in the north African country.
From there, he will jet straight to Qatar to officiate in the CAF Super Cup final at the Thani bin Jassim Stadium in Al Rayyan in Qatar.
New chapter begins as Sky morphs into Ineos
We might be heading into autumn, but for cycling fans it’s the start of the European spring cycling season and, for the next month, we can enjoy such classics as the Tour of Flanders and the race from hell – the Paris Roubaix.
But the biggest cycling news this week is the announcement of two massive sponsorship deals for World Tour cycling teams.
