World-famous photographer David Goldblatt was robbed of his equipment in the Port Elizabeth township of New Brighton.
Goldblatt, his wife, Lily, and a guide were robbed by five men on Wednesday morning as the 82-year-old photographer was wrapping up a trip around the Eastern Cape to photograph various monuments.
Goldblatt lost photographs, a new Nikon camera, lenses and a film camera he had for “many years”.
“I’ve been mugged several times. It goes back to 1964. The first camera I lost was in District Six. I was held up at knife-point,” says Goldblatt.
Nobody was hurt in Wednesday’s attack. Goldblatt travels in an Isuzu bakkie with a special cab for work and “where you can sleep if you have to”. He and his wife were in the back when they were accosted by five men.
“The young man who guided us tried to fend them off by closing us in the vehicle ... He was severely traumatised,” says Goldblatt.
