Bonang Matheba has been a Courvoisier ambassador for a year now and she thought hosting a masterclass using this cognac would be a good idea.
It certainly wasn’t a bad night, the small soirée was attended mostly by media and close friends of Bonang.
Queen B wore a striking grey jumpsuit as she floated about the room, warmly interacting with everybody. She did come across as a gracious host and the whole feel of the evening was laid-back and informal.
Those at the do were not even subjected to a speech by one of those “please buy our product” chaps who emerge to provide the evening with a moment of boredom before they disappear to look over the books again.
Bonang’s clique of close friends included her cousin Pinky, media personality Babalwa Mneno, Sefiso Hlongwane, Ryan Hignett, Jay Badza and Seo Mothibe.
The masterclass element of the night was fun, with mixologists teaching folks how to make cocktails with Courvoisier and allowing the influencer types behind the bar for pictures and Instagram updates.
All the while, DJ Shludu de Guru, who absolutely killed it last week at Anatii’s Courvoisier birthday celebration, spun lots of Chris Brown who on the day had been detained in Paris, France, after he was accused of rape. As his entire back catalogue rang out, the customary hors d’oeuvres were brought out.
Being that Mesh is an intimate venue that has enough space for everyone to sit at a table, why not get a master chef for the masterclass to prepare and curate pairings to complement what is a thoroughly enjoyable drink?
Something about the event felt as though it didn’t quite match the mind’s image of what an evening spent partying with Bonang should be like. It’s Queen B! We should’ve been treated to some lavish living. Acrobats suspended from the ceiling and pink rose petals on the floor!
It was still a lovely evening, but this year will have to see high-end brands like these apply a little more thought to the evenings they choose to host people. The staff and mixologists at Mesh should be commended, as they were as welcoming and as warm as the host herself.
