An ‘It’ girl gathering with E!

accreditation

This past Thursday a string of local A-list sisters gathered at Fifth on Alice at the bottom tier of the opulent Sandton Sun. There were, of course, a few well-established gentlemen there too, but the women of prominence proved to be the focal point at the E! entertainment channel’s launch of its latest promotion campaign. It coincided with the channel’s 15-year anniversary and DStv invited a few famous faces and hosted a jamboree with some kind of award element attached to it.

The idea was to Love E! Live E! which must have meant the channel was really eager for you to consume more of its wholesome and stimulating viewing.

This channel is responsible for such diabolically mind-numbing titles as Keeping Up with the Kardashians and the failed surgery show, Botched. But the bar was open and the company elevated the event. Minnie Dlamini arrived in a pink dress and blonde hair, very Marilyn Monroe, down to the matching opera gloves.

Media personality Lasizwe Dambuza provided the most questionable moment of the evening. He arrived wearing an odd-looking onesie which looked similar to something you might find in the toddler’s section. He paired that with a blazer and diamanté choker. The whole thing placed way too much emphasis on his package. Perhaps this is why the brother spent most of the night sitting.

Bonang Matheba was there, staying firmly in pocket with her outfit, a silver gown that was perfect on her. She was given an award by E! for being a pop culture icon. They aren’t wrong but the mini awards ceremony was just corny. Nobody was listening to host Kat Sinivasan, who looked debonair in a flamboyant tuxedo.

The audience was way more concerned with partying – as they should be, was this not a birthday celebration?

They gave awards to Black Coffee for his music, and another to Trevor Noah for being the coolest South African or something. Nomzamo Mbatha received one for being a pop culture philanthropist. Designer Gert-Johan Coetzee got one for his efforts in the fashion world.

Nigerian singer D’banj joined Bonang, Minnie and Roxy Burger on stage to address the audience about the new campaign after a performance by Shekhinah that was marred by poor sound. Cassper Nyovest looked as if he just came from the gym in sweat pants and a T-shirt.

The night was corrected musically by the sultry DJ Zinhle, who wore a pants suit and approached the decks much like a white collar assassin commissioned for a hit, of which she provided many.

Pearl Thusi emerged in a snake skin pants suit and hit the stage to hype her bestie. Somizi Mhlongo was there toasting the night with Bonang. Actress Buhle Samuels looked serene in the skirt she wore. Bontle Modiselle wore a white gown with a train and her man, Priddy Ugly, played the supportive gentleman
