Johnnie Walker’s exclusive offering

Game of Throne viewers, as well as whisky connoisseurs, are in for a lovely winter thanks to the first-of-its-kind partnership between HBO, Game of Thrones and Johnnie Walker South Africa, who this week launched the new White Walker by Johnnie Walker at Shepstone Gardens in Johannesburg.

This limited-edition Scotch whisky is inspired by the most bewildering and feared characters on the hit show – the White Walkers.

Its eerie white packaging complements the sweet vanilla and berry notes that make this whisky a light and palatable liquid that can be enjoyed as a cocktail, or served straight on ice or as a frozen treat.

Themed Winter Wonderland, the launch saw some of our favourite celebrities in attendance, including presenter Ayanda Thabethe, rapper Proverb, musicians Slikour and Zulu Mkhathini, actress Michelle Mosalakae and actor Lunga Shabalala.

MC Anele Mdoda, who was dressed all in white, encouraged guests to indulge in the drinks on offer and use the free Uber rides provided to get home.

Actress Enhle Mbali Maphumulo, Johnnie Walker brand ambassador, dressed in a statement two-piece metallic suit, said it was a no-brainer for her to work with the brand. “I love the brand, it’s so crisp. I think South Africa needs a cheerleader. There is so much room for improvement to create greatness in our personal spaces. You’re almost there! Keep walking, South Africa,” she said.

Waiters dressed in Game of Thrones-inspired outfits served the delicious beverage and tasty canapés: prawns, salmon and turkey with couscous and vegan treats.

The venue was decorated with ice sculptures. Activation stations and a Winter Wonderland photo booth further complemented the décor.

New dad and rapper Reason told City Press he enjoys the blue label whisky and overindulges in the series.

“I’m a big Game of Thrones fan and my favourite character is Khaleesi. She reminds me of my girl. She’s cool, she got dragons.

“Working with the brand has been amazing. It is the type of brand that is interested in what you are about. I like the emotive spirit behind it, the concept of walking and keeping on walking. I reference the concept a lot, even though it’s not in my brief. It resonates with my personal brand, and I also think it’s some really great whisky,” said Reason.

An excited marketing and innovation director for Diageo South Africa, Zumi Njongwe, said they had a good experience with the new beverage.

“You can drink it any way you like. I like to mix it as a tall serve and those who like it neat can freeze it and serve it as a double tot on ice. The other exciting element is how the packaging changes. When you freeze it, it reveals new words on the side: ‘winter is coming’.”

Now in its finale, this is the most anticipated season of Game of Thrones and it’s making waves worldwide.

This collaboration with Johnnie Walker makes for a “two’s company” set-up for the last leg of the series – and that can only be highly enjoyable
