Wednesday started way too early for us, getting up at 3am to get ready for a 6.30am flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town is never great.
We got to Cape Town at 8.35am and the weather seemed a bit confused – one minute hot and the next freezing cold. We headed straight to the seventh floor of the Equinox Building in Sea Point, which houses the Expresso Morning Show studios, where we were invited to the live recording of the Tropika Smoooth Fan Show.
While we ate chef Clement Pedro’s famous food and mingled with the crew, we were joined by the bubbly and humble Rorisang Thandekiso, the host of the show, who confessed being shocked at how deeply the fans know their celebrities.
The battle of the fans saw Nkosingiphile Nkosi from Walkerville in Vereeniging walking away with three massive prizes for just being a fan of Khanyi Mbau.
Nkosi earned the highest points in the first two rounds of the quiz, where the fans were asked questions about Mbau, and won the chance to spin a wheel for prizes.
In the first round he won himself a flat-screen TV, in the second one he walked away with a washing machine and in the third round he won R20 000 cash. He qualified to be in the finale, where he’ll play for R250 000 and a brand-new Honda.
He did mention at the beginning of the show that he was Mbau’s BFF and that he was going to win all the rounds.
Mbau was amazed at how much her fans knew about her and wished that she could have spent more time with them. Her long-term boyfriend, Tebogo Lerole, was also among the crowd that watched the live recording, but we gather he didn’t see much of the show because he had his earphones on and was seemingly glued to his cellphone.
