Bonang a no-show at Woolies shoot

Hectic schedule ruled out the shoot – it wasn’t because she didn’t want others to steal her shine

Flamboyant TV presenter Bonang Matheba was among the 20 personalities cast to participate in the latest Woolworths campaign, Catch the Feels.

That was until she pulled out at the eleventh hour, failing to pitch at The Market theatre last week.

City Press has reliably learnt that Matheba was scheduled to shoot her scenes last Friday but, because there were too many faces involved in the campaign, she refused to allow anyone to steal her shine and decided not to pitch for the shoot.

Catch the Feels is an initiative created by Woolworths to encourage feelings of unity, pride and positivity through South African trailblazers who have done extraordinary things.

The campaign features businessperson Basetsana Kumalo, comedian Celeste Ntuli, designers Thebe Magugu and Rich Mnisi, the Ndlovu Youth Choir and others.

It will be launched in March.

Bonang’s communications manager, Davin Phillips, from Celebrity Services Africa, told City Press that his client had a hectic schedule, which did not allow her to make it to the shoot.

“She has collaborated with Woolworths for her lingerie line and the House of BNG – the best selling bubbly in the stores. We have a good working relationship with them,” Phillips said.

Speaking on behalf of the Conversation Capital, the company handling the Catch the Feels campaign, Tamlyn van Heerden blamed Matheba’s busy schedule for not showing up at the shoot.

Amid the drama, Queen B was willing to share her line-up of her projects this year, one of which includes establishing a record label.

She will also be promoting the House of BNG, her Méthode Cap Classique, which is an official partner at next weekend’s Sun Met.

“It is a great honour not only to be the face of Sun Met, but also it’s a small milestone to have the House of BNG as the official celebration partner.

“The House of BNG was the official celebration partner at Miss SA. So, the opportunity to partner once again is exciting,” Matheba said.

She recently spoke at Twitter’s #OneTeam2020 conference, where she rubbed shoulders with the social media platform’s co-founder and CEO, Jack Patrick Dorsey.

“It was, of course, a great honour to meet Jack. I found out that he will be moving to Africa for four months – it was amazing to share an understanding of the importance of Africa.”

Matheba, who now travels between South Africa and the US, is working on multiple projects, including one with SABC1.

Although she couldn’t divulge much, she did share that the SABC1 project was going to be something special for her fans.

“I look forward to giving the viewers access to certain moments that have not been seen before, as well as revealing some behind the scenes of my biggest moments last year.”

This week her fans said on social media that they missed their queen.

They said she had been “too silent” – and they went as far as to create a hashtag, #WeMissYouBonang, to lure her back to social media.

“There will be a lot more travelling. A few projects I’m working on are based in the US. And then the expansion of the House of BNG is something I can’t wait to share – we have some exciting innovations coming.

“There is another new business venture that will empower women. The Bonang Matheba Bursary Foundation will be a key focus this year.”

Asked if she was serious about starting a record label, Matheba said: “I love music. It has always been a passion and there is nothing more exciting or fulfilling than starting a venture in which you can use your influence in the music genres you love.”
