Hollywood star Charlize Theron has won praise and thanks from several members of the US’s transgender community.

This week she made headlines when she revealed that she is raising her seven-year-old child as a girl, after having originally introduced her to the world as a boy.

She said Jackson, one of two children adopted by Theron, was just three when she told her mum: “I am not a boy.”

“I want to see her thrive,” Theron said.

Some in the UK media have recently targeted trans teens with transphobic articles.

Theron was seen as an antidote to moral conservatism by the trans community.

Trans actress Jamie Clayton sent Theron “so much love and light” on Twitter.

UK-based Mermaids works with young gender-diverse people. The charity’s CEO Susie Green said: “Parents are constantly criticised for believing their gender-variant children and supporting them to live authentically. We applaud Charlize Theron for listening to her daughter. Too often children are dismissed, their feelings regarded as irrelevant.”

Green told Gay Star News that she gave the thumbs up to respectful coverage by mainstream media – a welcome change.

The gender non-conforming writer and performance artist, Alok Valid-Menon, said on Facebook: “This should be standard and utterly unnewsworthy, but the fact that it’s not shows how much work we still have to do.”

Theron has previously been seen as a LGBTI ally for her support of same-sex marriage.
