Where there’s Dr Malinga there’s no sleeping – literally.
From Akulalwa with DJ Shimza in 2015 and Akulaleki the following year to last year’s Angilalanga Izolo and now Solalek’seni, Dr Malinga is the king of sleepless nights.
His fans have been expecting him to drop a song about not sleeping and his latest offering, which dropped on Friday, certainly did not disappoint.
“It was not my intention to do the songs every year,” says the bubbly Malinga.
“I remember fans started a trend, asking what was I going to sing about until 2022. I just followed what people wanted and followed their sign.”
Solalek’seni features Durban outfit Rudeboyz and Malinga says it was “written by me and the fans. Even on the cover it says written by Dr Malinga and fans. I am loved by my fans; I am conquering the world because of them and if I do not listen to them I’ll be broke”.
The 38-year-old says he wouldn’t have released the song had his fans not encouraged him to do so.
He says he is honoured by their love, hence the decision to feature them.
The song has a verse that says: “Dr Malinga, yini wathula nje? Siyalala na?” (Dr Malinga, why are so you quiet? Are we sleeping?)
Fans were already jamming to the song before its official release.
The kick master told City Press that he wanted people to dance to his song Nyusi Volume, but they wanted a song that tells them to sleep or party all night.
Like many other successful musicians, Malinga started from humble beginnings.
His first job was handing out advertising pamphlets for furniture shops for R200.
He started singing outside furniture shops and won the Mbabane Cultural Calabash Competition for three years in a row.
People started to know him when he was featured by DJ Choice in his hit Casanova, which was nominated for a 2016 SA Music Award for Record of the Year.
His second big hit, Father To Be, a collaboration with house duo Black Motion, was also nominated for awards.
