Connie and Shona Ferguson’s latest show is about to air on the back of a number of blockbusters
Connie and Shona Ferguson have done it again.
The power couple behind hits including the drama series Rockville, and the film Step Up to a Start has produced the highly anticipated The Queen, which starts airing on Mzansi Magic at 9pm today.
The Queen, Ferguson Films’ first telenovela, comes on the back of the success of Igazi.
The series has had viewers glued to their TV screens on Sunday nights.
Connie told The Star: “Shona and I developed this story [The Queen] with the writers.
“We are involved from the brainstorming session to pitching to the channels.
“Obviously, Shona had a lot more time to do all the meetings. I wasn’t able to. But I’m now done with Generations – The Legacy and [am now] full-time on The Queen.”
Since Ferguson Films was established in 2010, it has launched a number of actors’ careers. These include Boitumelo “Boity” Thulo, Ayanda Thabethe and Gail Mabalane.
Why did Connie and Shona make the jump from acting, to acting and producing?
“We wanted a platform that allowed us to create an environment where we could think out of the box – and not necessarily follow the norm. TV is about growth and change. What was great 10 years ago is not really the same today,” Connie told Destiny.
Not surprisingly, the Fergusons are not just the creators of The Queen – they will also star in it.
The “fast-paced” telenovela is about dedicated wife, mother and successful businesswoman Harriet Khoza, played by Connie, who is forced to do the unthinkable when her husband’s secret comes to light.
Harriet, who lived her life as a spoilt trophy wife, is forced to take over the family empire and has to bring unity to a family at war with itself.
In The Queen, Shona – who plays the role of charming politician Thapelo “Tyson” Mokoena on Isidingo – tackles the role of Jerry Tuelo, a detective at Tembisa Police Station.
The project also sees Connie and Sello Maake Ka-Ncube reunite.
Previously, they thrilled viewers as the sister-brother pair Karabo and Archie Moroka in SABC1’s Generations.
It is no different this time, as Maake Ka-Ncube plays Kgosi, Harriet’s older brother and her co-conspirator.
This week, Maake Ka-Ncube told City Press he was excited to act alongside Connie again.
“We’re rediscovering the respect we’ve had for each other for years and how we’ve grown as actors.”
He said he had learnt sexual liberation from his character.
