Even for those living in Mpumalanga’s Lowveld region who are used to picturesque sights of nature, there are hidden getaway experiences right on their doorstep.

It’s like discovering gold. My family and I drove only 80km to Sabi River Sun Resort in Hazyview and had an unforgettable weekend packed with scrumptious meals, relaxation, adrenalin-pumping adventures, and getting up close and personal with gigantic elephants.

I can only imagine how tourists from the Highveld’s flat grasslands – with their sparse vegetation and mine dumps – gawk as this vista opens up before their eyes.

The titillating experience starts as you arrive at the resort.

From the gate, a lush 18-hole golf course beckons, and it feels like one has reached paradise. There is no point in being a lazy bum because there are volleyball and tennis courts, and even bowling greens. Mountain biking is also an option for the sporty types.

While adults mind their own business and sip sundowners, children can play in an area with slides, swings, monkey bars and the like. Adults and children can also enjoy the sight of hippos and crocodiles in the nearby Sabi River.

The Sabi River Sun Resort offers a truly family-friendly environment. The rooms are spacious and cater for adults with children. The hotel has 60 rooms with DStv and Wi-Fi for those who want to stay in touch with the outside world.

Children have a lot to keep them entertained as the hotel always organises fun events. The Heather’s Spa at the hotel will help you unwind with a variety of relaxing treatments.

While in the area, there are plenty of other activities and countless tourist attractions close by to visit because the resort is situated in the heart of natural attractions and wildlife.

Hazyview is along the Panorama Route and, within an hour or two, you can make a Sho’t Left to the historical gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest. You should also visit God’s Window, Lisbon Falls, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Blyde River Canyon.

Along the route, there is a new addition you can try out – the Graskop Gorge Lift.

The viewing lift travels 51m down the Graskop Gorge and gives tourists a breathtaking view of the face of the gorge and its waterfalls. Later, take a walk in the pristine forest.

For adrenalin-pumping adventure, you could go ziplining. The Skyway Trails zipline is set in wonderful natural surroundings in Hazyview.

If you want to get up close to animals, the Elephant Sanctuary is a perfect place to be. It is an educational tour and visitors can feed, touch and take a walk with the majestic animals.

Most children love this and even those who feel timid will melt and enjoy being so close to the elephants when they realise how harmless and tame the animals are.

The Kruger National Park, where there are plenty of opportunities to see the Big Five, is about 30 minutes’ drive from the resort. This is certainly not a place to miss when visiting Mpumalanga.

At the end of each day, you can go back to the Sabi River Sun Resort, swim in the pool and feast on your dinner on the outdoor terrace with a view of the golf course and sounds of the bush.

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
