Entertainer Moshe Ndiki says although October marks the inception of Pride Month in South Africa, society still has along way to go.
“We just want to live and celebrate ourselves. But our existence is seen as a threat to the human race everywhere we go,” said the TV personality. The actor greeted us with his magnetic charm as we began to unpack the complex layers that make up the distinctiveness behind his infectious smile.
“Everyone was fine with me being a gay presenter, but now that I have a partner and I’m starting my own family I’m being objectified,” he said.
He admitted that dealing with homophobia had taken its toll on him. He went on to share that it hasn’t been easy dealing with the prejudice.
“Sometimes you cry, get triggered and become sad, but other times you don’t let it bother you,” he said.
Not long ago, after posting a picture of his partner Phelo Bala and him kissing, a follower described the picture as “disgusting”.
Rapper Cassper Nyovest intervened and defended the couple, saying: “All we need to do on this earth is spread love. We spend too much time commenting on other people’s orientations.
It seems the actor attracts controversy
Last month Moshe came under fire after he apparently made remarks while on air at Metro FM insinuating that Ntsiki Mazwai didn’t bath.
Mazwai hit back saying the station was protecting Moshe for body shaming and demanded an apology.
He has since apologised to her.
But when asked about the incident he said: “I apologised for what I said and how it made her feel. But the minute it became personal and malicious, that’s when the buck stops,” he said, adding that it’s not about what he said, but rather how it made the person feel.
He highlighted his disappointment at the backward views people held.
An example of this was how people often compared him with TV personality Somizi Mhlongo andhow gay entertainers often insulted one another.
He said there was enough space for “all of us”.
Moshe’s career has been a roller coaster
However, he said his faith kept him going and he fondly reflected on times when he moved from being unemployed and taking videos for fun to securing several gigs on MTV and Vuzu.
“For me, my career is a calling. I just wake up and go to work every day like everyone else. I don’t see the difference between my job and someone who works at a retail store.
“I’m just living my truth and my dream. Even if it all disappears, I will still be me.”
He said he was not afraid of being broke, because he had been there before.
He described himself as self-made with the help of the internet. He readily acknowledged the power of social media.
His secret to staying relevant was being authentic.
“The key is to not get high off your own supply. I don’t post when there’s no need.
“Even when you watch my YouTube videos, I don’t have a fancy camera or amazing lighting then. I just keep it simple because content is key. You can look amazing and still have bland content,” he said.
Last year was the highlight of his career when he banked R1 million for the first time, he said. “I invested the money in property and several other investments.”
Last month he got engaged to his fiancé Bala.
But for fans who are eagerly awaiting the wedding day, they might have to wait a bit longer.
“We haven’t set a wedding date, we’re enjoying being fiancés for the time being,” he said with a chuckle.
