The first name that comes to mind when we reflect on which celebrity owned this year is media personality Boitumelo “Boity” Thulo.

The 29-year-old rapper travelled to all the corners of the world, bought herself a luxury space grey SUV valued at R2.5 million, surprised her mother with a brand-new Mercedes-Benz worth R1 million as a birthday gift, her single – Wuz Dat – went platinum, with more than two million streams, and she is working on a music documentary set to be released next year.

“I am living my dream,” she told City Press at Red Pepper Pictures in Linden, northern Johannesburg.

this year was the best year of my career

“Although it feels like there is much more to do, this year was the best year of my career as there were many personal gains, from opening at the Idols SA finale to performing at the SA Film and Television Awards.”

Although Boity refused to divulge more on her documentary, what she did say was that it’s the story of her music journey.

The actress said travelling was part of her New Year’s resolutions for the year.

“I am glad I explored the world, it was the best experience. I learnt about people’s culture and, most importantly, to appreciate home more as there is no place like home.”

However, not everyone is happy about Boity’s success.

Some on social media have questioned who is blessing her luxurious lifestyle, but she is not bothered.

Is there a problem in being in a relationship with someone who is monied

“I’ve worked for more than 10 years. If it was a guy living his best life no one would be questioning it, but because it’s a woman people are paying attention.

“Is there a problem in being in a relationship with someone who is monied?” she asked.

She says it is sad when men always “want to dictate to us by driving the narrative on who we should date, how we should behave and what we should wear”.

Her advice: “Young people should never stop chasing their dreams and never let society dictate how they should live their lives.”

The artist says she doesn’t care how people label her. To those who call her a slay queen, Boity says to her a slay queen is a queen who slays every day.

“I know what I want in life and I won’t settle for less because of people.”

Talking about Wuz Dat going platinum, the artist said she didn’t see it coming.

Boity is currently in demand and is fully booked for the festive season.

“I am looking forward to attending the [Castle Lite] Republic of Extra Cold, taking place on December 28.

“Being chosen as one of the ministers and performers on the event is the best thing,” she said.

Although her career is blossoming, Boity acknowledges that she has made some wrong choices in the past.

“My previous management was the worst. It hindered my career growth.

“As artists, sometimes we find ourselves signing bad contracts that bind us. I am fighting to get out and I know one day it’s going to be over. My destiny is not in their hands.”

She has learnt her lessons and is ready to move on.

“I won’t let anything break me at the peak of my career. My New Year’s resolution is to get my music on to the international space.”

Boity says she is ready for parenthood.

“I am ready to start a family. I’ve been ready since I was 21 years old. But obviously I need a good partner to settle down with.”
