Khanyi Mbau portrays herself in upcoming thriller

Fresh off Leon Schuster’s new film, Frank & Fearless, actress, radio deejay and TV host Khanyi Mbau is heading back to the big screen – this time, in a role that reflects her own life.

The new movie, a thriller called Red Room, is set for release on March 8.

In her early days, Mbau was constantly in the news for dating sugar daddy Mandla Mthembu, driving a Lamborghini and living large.

In the movie, Mbau stars as a pregnant Zama Marawa, married to an apparently wealthy businessman.

But when her husband dies, she finds herself homeless, destitute and broken – and that is where the thriller really begins, according to the film’s trailer, released this week.

The young mother, it seems, finds herself trapped in a bizarre world of sex and display, and must fight for her survival.

Proof of her finding her own feet as a businesswoman in the past few years, Mbau is also the co-producer of Red Room.

About the role, she told City Press: “I am a woman who has been through so much in life. To some extent I relate to Zama, because I also share some of the difficulties with her.”

So, getting into character, she said, was a walk in the park, because she reminded herself of the days when she used to share her struggles over wine with her sister.

“I had to tap into those moments and emotions to play Zama well.”
