There’s a reason Lanser’s on Main is rated one of the top restaurants in the affluent suburb, writes Samantha Cook.
Lanser’s on Main
453 Main Road, Bryanston
. . . . .
There are two central tenets to a great restaurant: good food and good ambience. Lanser Fourie, chef and owner, nails both of these with ease, offering a relaxed but refined atmosphere and an almost matchless view of Johannesburg. The mood is intimate and light – ideal for a date night.
The menu is a lush list of fine-dining dishes with strong French and Italian influences, with mouth-watering items such as steak tartare, carpaccio, risotto and crème brûlée.
The diverse offering will leave you wringing your hands with indecision, but it’s hard to go wrong with your choices – everything both looks and sounds delicious. While some of the more indulgent dishes verge on the pricey side (the pork belly main comes in at R158), the portions are generous and the flavours are wonderful.
And if you’re not wanting to splurge, their pizzas are more affordable (a large Regina will set you back R98).
As much as I adore all things food, the unique personal gestures from Lanser himself were what sealed the deal for me – he is a fixed presence in the restaurant, moving seamlessly between the kitchen and dining room and in constant communication with his team of waiters.
From his interactions with customers, it was clear to see that he values relationship and connection, which is not something you experience every day.
From explaining the specials to each table himself, to greeting every party at the door as they departed, I was left with an unexpected sense of comfort and homeliness. I will definitely be back.
