Should you find yourself with little to do at home this festive season, there are a few exciting activities to keep the family occupied.

Are you are still indecisive about whether you want to spend your festive season at home or outdoors?

Well, here are few affordable entertainment venues that you could visit with your loved ones:

Happy Island

Situated in Muldersdrift, the water park offers guests world-class entertainment including a spray park and various water slides. You might have to cough up a fortune to enter the biggest family-friendly water park, but you won’t regret it. The venue has more than 13 pools and slides for visitors to choose from.

For those looking to spend Christmas Day in the sun, Happy Island will be serving Christmas lunch for R285 per child and R550 per adult, both including access to the water park.

For Christmas lunch sounds, soulful deejay Paul Mtirara will keep you and yours entertained.

The venue also boasts an alfresco restaurant specialising in Italian cuisine and other specialities. For those who prefer to eat on the go, there are affordable outlets and food vendors that sell everything from burgers and chicken wings to ribs and fish.

Happy Island is, for the first time, inviting guests to bring along their picnic baskets on December 26 to enjoy soul, R&B and jazz music.

The standard entrance fee for kids and pensioners is R99 and adults is R199.

Bookings can be made online at happyislandsa.co.zaand at the gate

Norval Foundation Sculpture Garden

The Norval Foundation Sculpture Garden is a 20-minute drive out of Cape Town. With striking mountains and vineyard vistas, the garden is contained and is safe for kids, so you can plan a laid-back picnic outing in this lush setting. The venue also offers a range of crafty children’s workshops.

The Norval Foundation only takes five picnic bookings a day, so expect lots of privacy, no crowds and a tastefully curated offering prepared by Skotnes Restaurant should you wish to not cater for yourself.

Skotnes packs picnic baskets for R95 per child and R295 per adult. The price includes admission to the museum’s gallery spaces and parking

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden

Botanical gardens are popular for outdoor outings. You can find one in every province, so why not swing by one that’s closest to you this festive season?

The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort is the best place to hang out with your loved ones if you want tranquillity and peace. Kids will have a great time running around, while you take in the garden abundance of wildlife with more than 220 bird species.

One of the exciting things about this particular garden is its waterfall, which you cannot leave without taking a few pictures of.

You can bring your own picnic basket, but perched on a picturesque lot is Eagle’s Fare Restaurant, an indigenous abode that invites you to take pleasure in its large menu that offers breakfast as well as light and hearty meals throughout the day.

However, the garden does not allow braai stands, has no pool and music is not allowed.

Entrance is R55 for adults and R15 for learners

Kids love the outdoors and animals, so why not give them both and take the whole family to the Johannesburg Zoo?

Visit the big SA National Museum of Military History and get some milage on your fitness tracker walking around the venue.

Later in the day catch the Festival of Lights, featuring classical, harmonious performances which take place from 7pm to 10pm.

Barely a stone’s throw away from the zoo, make a breakfast or lunch booking at Zulas Food Emporium, formerly known as Moyo Zoo Lake. Zulas serves a buffet of African cuisine from R119 to R199.

Entrance to the Johannesburg Zoo is R120 for adults and R60 for pensioners and kids
