Thandiswa Mazwai, aka King Tha, is bringing you the hottest party in Jozi this Friday at the Newtown Music Factory in the form of Fetish – an alternative party for alternative "kids".
She will be joined throughout the night on stage by her famed rock star friends, the BLK JKS, and some special guest DJs. It is imperative that you throw away your inhibitions and expectations and be prepared for many sexy musical surprises.
Why Fetish as the theme?
“The theme fetish is about pushing myself and how far I can go with certain things. Fetish denotes an obsession and it evokes another part of our psyche, a part that is, in fact, very creative. But really, it’s about my obsession with music and experimenting. It’s the ability to conjure things and to create something out of nothing. I’m also addicted to the power [music] has to bring people together and create a magical moment,” Mazwai says.
The award-winning singer has also placed a disclaimer for the all-inclusive show.
“The only person I don’t want to come [to the show] is a person that doesn’t understand freedom and other people’s rights to express themselves and that doesn’t understand consent. Don’t come ruining other people’s fun. Just stay at home and don’t come bore us. But if you’re happy seeing that the gays are happy, that all the queers and women are happy, then please come,” Mazwai says.
She adds that people expecting her to play the same music from the last 20 years should also not come.
“We’re playing a bunch of different songs. Just come because you love music, you wanna dress up and have a damn good time late into the night,” she chuckles.
Mazwai says creativity is essential to her evolving as an artist.
“The first commandment of being an artist is to be committed to creativity and creativity is about allowing yourself to do unknown things that you haven’t tried before. I try and do that every time; a lot of people want an artist to stay the same and I don’t wanna be bored so I’m trying out a lot of different things. I’m compelled to create,” she says.
The show borders on freedom and expression and it comes just in time on the eve of Freedom Day, and Mazwai asks that everyone who attends dresses in outfits that represent their “fetish”.
“There’s something about expressing yourself and being free that allows other people to do the same. I don’t mind people coming to the show and experiencing something they were not ready for or expecting. I am looking forward to seeing what the legendary children will be wearing as we dance the night away,” she says.
