In Mzansi, we’re notorious for our subpar meme culture but in the midst of all the disappointments there's a glimmer of hope. Here are the memes that made our year a little more bearable.
CATS CAUSING A CRAZE
Twitter has been eventful this year with users retelling their encounters with a Joburg man-turned-cat who drives a taxi from Newtown to Fourways.
It’s no surprise either that the meme of reality TV star Taylor Armstrong, of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, yelling at a cat gained notoriety on the Twitter streets of South Africa.
AND I OOP
Jasmine Masters is best known for competing in the fourth and seventh seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.
However, this humorous moment of shock and surprise from a video on her YouTube channel is what gained her global acclaim when it went viral.
I HAVE FAILED YOU
Cartoon Network animated TV series Dexter’s Laboratory has produced some of the best memes.
Recently, it created a new craze with the “I have failed you” meme, which shows a scene in which Dexter looks up at a poster of Albert Einstein and says: “I have failed you.”
The picture of Einstein has been changed and photoshopped often to produce hilariously different takes.
In this case, activist and radio host Dr Sindi van Zyl’s meme trended following a thread about drug abuse.
SORRY TO THIS MAN
American actress Keke Palmer’s meme-worthy moment came about during an interview with Vanity Fair where she reacted to a photograph of former US vice-president Dick Cheney by admitting that she did not recognise him.
Her words: “I hate to say it, I hope I don’t sound ridiculous. I don’t know who this man is. I mean, he could be walking down the street, I wouldn’t recognise him. Sorry to this man.”
The meme has since gained popularity with tweeps all over the world.
