Just when you thought a box of last-minute-bought chocolates would do the trick as a Mother’s Day gift – we’re here to welcome you to 2018 and say: think again.

The good news is you still have a few days to get your act together and get your mother or partner a gift both thoughtful and guaranteed to put a smile on her face – reaffirming her immeasurable value in your life.

So please take notes. Don’t say we’ve never done anything for you.

Experiences:

Gift Experience SA – an online gift company – says giving your loved one an “experience” can be an exciting and unforgettable way to make memories that don’t come with too hefty a price tag. In fact, a recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Research showed experiential gifts are more effective than material gifts because they improve relationships from the recipient’s perspective.

A local company has these package ideas for a Mother’s Day treat:

. Chocolate Truffle Making, Muldersdrift (R609)

Right up there with diamonds being “a girl’s best friend”, is chocolate. This hands-on chocolate truffle-making experience is for the true chocoholic. You also learn about the process and history of chocolate making and get to take your truffles home to enjoy;

. Sunday lunch and a game drive for two at the Zebra Country Lodge in Cullinan, near Pretoria (R839); and

. Porcupine Trail Wine Walk, Stellenbosch (R379)

A fun-filled family adventure where you can choose one of three guided trails. It includes a light picnic-style lunch and wine tasting.

Personalised gifts:

If the experiences are still out of your price-range – try good old engraving. It shows thought, adds to the value of a gift, marking it forever as theirs and it’s downright sweet.

Whether she is a wine lover or coffee-and-tea kind of woman, you can add a thoughtful touch to the tried-and-tested Mother’s Day mug or wine glass by engraving her name on to it or a personal message that would resonate with what she means to you. That goes for jewellery too.

Coupons:

If you really have no budget for a material gift – don’t worry, mothers are known to be very compassionate and understanding.

And, while she will probably give you a heartfelt smile and “thank you” just for wishing her a good day, coupons are an inexpensive way to put her needs first.

Simply google coupon templates and write down what each entitles her to get when she cashes it in.

Coupons can include you cooking her meal or doing the household chores for the week.

And, of course, she must be able to cash in one of those on Mother’s Day.

But please, do not, for the love of all things holy, get her a kitchen appliance.

It doesn’t matter how much she loves cooking, just don’t do it.
