Housekeepers

Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161)

. . . . -

Monday nights have taken an exciting turn with the new dramatic thriller Housekeepers being added to the Mzansi Magic schedule.

The show explores the class dynamics that exist in our society and how justice is a mere preferential exercise according to your class and privilege.

The show goes behind the high walls of the wealthy who believe that their power should stretch beyond their mansions. But, as we all know, the women who work for the rich and oblivious see all and know all.

The new drama revolves around the journey of devoted daughter Linda Ndlovu (Thando Thabethe), who hides her identity as she takes on the role of a housekeeper in an attempt to bring the Zwide family to justice after her beloved mother June Ndlovu (Clementine Mosimane) is framed for the murder of her patient Veronica Zwide (Nthati Moshesh).

Housekeepers has many levels of drama that I have so far not seen executed as profoundly in a first episode in a long time as I did on this show.

Taking the approach of a nonlinear narrative, the writing on the show feels naturally fresh.

Because they are offering us the story hook in a drip-feed approach, the Housekeepers team killed the predictability the show would have had. The acting by the likes of Mangaliso Ngema as Peter Zwide, Zikhona Sodlaka as Boniswa Mzobe, Mosimane as Ndlovu, Matsepo Maleme as Eunice Khotso and Connie Chiume as Maria Motsepe is effortless, and it is clear that the cast understands their roles and it’s obvious that they put great thought into the delivery of their lines.

Housekeepers is a riveting, refreshing and pacey drama packed with tension set against the backdrop of the sophisticated Fourways suburb in northern Joburg and the nearby vibrant Diepsloot township. The show brings life to the voiceless and sometimes overlooked women who run the households of those with financial power and social stature. These are the women who often also keep those families together.

Airing its third episode tomorrow, the only reason I’m not giving the show five stars is because I’m not sure whether this winning streak will continue for the rest of the season – though my gut is telling me that it will.

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
