With more than 11 million votes, the number of contestants left in Idols South Africa is now down to five and Nosipho Silinda (18) is not one of them.

Her departure on the show shocked many viewers because she was considered to have had the most powerful voice and her fans had hoped that she was going to make it to the finale.

Sadly their votes were not enough to keep her in the competition.

Only she and Thato remained on the stage, and her departure was proof that a good voice is not enough for one to win the competition.

People want entertainment – the voice must be accompanied by a smile, charisma and personality, which the Grade 11 learner failed to deliver every Sunday since the top 16 was chosen.

The judges tried to get her to loosen up but they failed. Randall Abrahams once tried to get her to use the stage.

“Come to us, do not expect us to come to you,” he said.

After her showstopping performance on October 7, which saw the top 7 take to the stage, Unathi felt that there was a distinct lack of passion in her performance.

“It was the perfect song choice for you and everything worked, but where was the fire?” asked Unathi.

Somizi once told her to “own your star quality”.

Being unique and staying true to yourself is acceptable, but in a competition like Idols SA where you need people’s votes, you have to give it your all.

Silinda’s leaving the competition was a tough pill to swallow for her family – they all left the venue as soon as she left the stage.

She also did not do interviews with the media after the show because “she was not feeling well”.

Beyoncé’s father, Dr Mathew Knowles, who was the guest judge gave Silinda a nod before she bowed out of the competition.

Thato, who hails from the small town of Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, has won the hearts of the viewers and he has been amazing to watch while he grows as an artist.

He got a standing ovation after his rendition of Inkomo by The Soil and all the judges agreed that he had won round one.

Abrahams said: “You are the one performer who sees beyond this competition, and you’ve got the biggest smile of all the contestants.”

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
