Metro FM DJs Majota “Phat Joe” Khambule and Pearl Thusi were pulled off air yesterday after listeners complained that the two were always bashing TV star Bonang Matheba and her boyfriend, rapper AKA.
The two radio personalities, who present their popular entertainment show between 6am and 9am on Saturdays, during which they usually comment on celebrity stories that made headlines during the week, were replaced by colleagues Sphectacula and DJ Naves.
SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed to City Press yesterday that the two were “not scheduled” to do their show yesterday, but he refused to divulge the reasons behind their apparent suspension.
“We are still dealing with some unresolved issues. Once they are resolved, the talents will report back at work,” he said.
Three highly placed radio industry insiders told City Press this week that the two were suspended because they criticised Matheba every Saturday.
“On their show, they are always commenting on Bonang and AKA instead of focusing on what they were hired to do,” said one of the senior insiders. “This has been going on for a while now.”
Khambule declined to talk about why he and Thusi were taken off the air, but told City Press that on the show they commented on newsworthy stories and what was already in the public domain.
Thusi’s PR team told City Press that, unfortunately, they couldn’t give more information at this point as they don’t have any.
