TV darling Somizi Mhlongo was officially welcomed as a groom by the Motaung family at their home in Kibler Park south of Johannesburg yesterday.

Somizi arrived with family and friends dressed in traditional Zulu gear. He was later joined by his partner, Mohale Motaung, who wore blue jeans with a Basotho traditional blanket and hat.

Family and friends sang the popular traditional song Baba Mnumzane while the newlyweds swapped their traditional garb for glamorous outfits designed by celebrity fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee.

They then entered the marquee packed with hundreds of guests. Afro-jazz queen Judith Sephuma opened with prayer, while entertainer Moshe Ndiki, who was the MC, welcomed the guests.

Security was very tight at the wedding, ensuring that only invited guests were allowed in. Guests parked their cars at a parking area some distance from the wedding venue. If your name was on the guest list, you were whisked off by shuttle to the main wedding venue, which was not far from Mohale’s family home.

For someone as popular as Somizi, one would have thought everyone would have had access to the wedding venue, but it was not the case.

Among the people who made it onto the guest list were A-list celebrities Julius Malema and his wife Mantwa; Caster Semenya and her wife, Violet Raseboya; Khanyi Mbau with her partner Tebogo Lerole; TV personality Bonang Matheba; Kelly Khumalo; Durban businesswoman Shauwn Mpisane and Noma Gigaba, just to mention a few.

The #SomhaleTraditionalWedding was trending on social media as everyone close to the couple congratulated them on their big day.

Somizi’s friend Criselda Dudumashe wrote on Facebook: “My darlings, I would like to take this time to be in agreement with you as you tie the knot between two families and declare a journey of an everlasting love. Always remember to choose love always, choose to love each other daily. Have fun together, laugh together, grow together and be one with God at all times. I love you, your Big Sister Criselda.”

Mbau posted a video where she said she knows how much the wedding meant to Somizi, and how much he dreamt about this day. “Life has showed you so much, but you’ve stayed so soft and romantic. I wish you all the best.”

The newlyweds met at a book signing for Somizi’s bestselling memoir, Dominoes: Unbreakable Spirit, in Sandton in June 2017.

The couple celebrated their second anniversary on Heritage Day with a cute video montage of their two years of love.

Somizi shared an emotional message to Mohale, in which he said: “24 September 2017 was day one of US. 24 September 2019 is year two of US. In three days’ time, it will be day one of ONENESS. I love you. And I know you love me.”

After all the formalities at Kibler Park, guests were entertained by DJ Lerato Kganyago, Prince Kaybee, Naked DJ, Dineo Ranaka, DJ Olwethu and many other artists. Congratulations #Somhale on your special day. We wish you all the best.

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
