Shucked oyster bar is one of Joburg's best kept secrets.
Shucked Oyster Bar
357 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall Park
....-
You may have heard of The Royale bar on Jan Smuts Avenue – a curious Cuban joint with a weird aesthetic.
Just above this, but still at Albans Square, is Shucked – a very cosy oyster bar that opened in June and sounds a lot more boujee than it is.
With its Art Deco-era oyster pink walls and plush suede seating with dark brown wood furnishings, the comfy eatery feels sophisticated without the whole experience seeming snobby.
The idea is to order some bubbles or a little gin and eat what is regarded as quite a high-brow delicacy. I hit it up for a date night and ordered six of these underwater aphrodisiacs topped with flaked salt, lemon, caviar and some sublime dressings for R150.
They keep it simple as the oysters taste like they were flown, business-class, from Saldanha Bay. I paired this with a dirty Martini as it sounds nice to say when you order. This, as it turns out, is a nasty drink.
The balcony does overlook a rather busy road in the city, but the evening light is romantic.
The platter was ideal to share and as far as date night goes, you know I’d never steer you wrong.
