Royal Heritage Festival a chaotic affair

The Royal Heritage Festival went down in Thohoyandou in Limpopo last weekend. Last year it was a chaotic affair with a series of unfortunate events transpiring. City Press had the misfortune of going all the way to Venda and not being able to take to the show.

This year we ventured out again but with a different public relations company and, on the whole, the experience was a lot better.

On Friday night, the festivities kicked off with the gospel night as it is best to cleanse your soul before drowning it in liquor. A host of gospel talent performed at the Limpopo National Dam venue.

Having the concert near a dam does wonders for acoustics with the large body of water meting out extra reverberations and distortions.

Rebecca Malope stole the show, naturally.

The next day brought with it the main attractions, the turn-up, the party, the bash! After a light spot of adventuring on quad bikes around a small village close to the venue, it was time to freshen up and hit the party.

There was an absolute sea of people in attendance to get a glimpse of acts such as AKA and Sho Madjozi, who really comes alive in her home province.

You would do well to experience her sound where it was crafted. Old school crooner Ringo Madlingozi has still got it and he let loose with some of his best hits which have stood the test of time. DJ Maphorisa also had a notable set along with King Monada. We’re still trying to figure out if Sjava is an Afro-pop singer or a rapper or a hybrid.

Boity
Boity needs to add more songs to her repertoire as a four-song set is not it.

Shame, although her performance was memorable, TV presenter-turned-rapper Boity Thulo will need to add more songs to her repertoire as a four-song set is just not the one.

There was a little confusion with the entry tags that some of the media contingent were given to allow us to take in the show from a comfortable marquee. The wrist tags with the access chip didn’t have the proper coding in some cases.

The media tags did go missing the day before due to a miscommunication. Quite a costly loss as these tags were valued at close to R100 000 but they were recovered even if they had to be secured to their rightful owners with staples.

There was also more confusion around drinks and even a couch as a couple who had purchased tickets to the swanky marquee area were not willing to move and relinquish their seats to the group of media people.

So some furniture had to be moved around to appease everyone.

Once everyone was settled, voshos were dropped in abundance and this festival that is growing steadily proved to be a worthy entry on the social calendar of South Africa.

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
