The biggest night in SA TV and film has come and gone.
The tenth annual South African Film and Television awards gave recognition to local stars at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand this weekend.
Hosted by Expresso presenter Katlego Maboe and It girl Minnie Dlamini, Maboe also happened to win Best Presenter for the second time in a row.
The evening’s festivities began with song and dance from Mi Casa’s JSomething and award-winning rapper Fifi Cooper.
Some of the night’s biggest winners include drama series Umlilo, which picked up four awards on the night while otherwise overlooked youth drama Skeem Saam took home the golden horn for Best TV Soap in a category voted for by the viewers at home.
The gripping Afrikaans drama about teen sex abuse Dis ek, Anna (It’s me, Anna) took the award for Best Feature Film.
“This story had to be told. Abuse isn’t about what skin colour you are or what social class you’re from,” a member of the cast said while accepting the award.
The Saftas this year introduced new categories in celebration of South Africa’s talent. SABC1’s Shift presenter Rhulani Baloyi was awarded the Special Recognition to Persons with Disabilities.
Veteran actress Nomhle Nkonyeni (74) was honoured with the lifetime achievement award. Nkonyeni teaches young children in Port Elizabeth to unlock their acting skills to enter the world of the arts.
Other big winners included Nthati Moshesh, who picked up best TV actress for the second year in a row.
Vusi Kunene won best actor in a lead role for his character in Isibaya.
Fulu Mugovhani scooped the award for best actress in a film for the internationally acclaimed feature Ayanda.
“Finally I feel validated. This is the best thing that has ever happened. The sky is the limit,” Mugovhani said about making the leap from TV soap to big screen.
Like every awards evening there were some red carpet blunders and successes.
Matching up was Thapelo Mokoena and wife Lesego-Tshepang Mokoena, who was dressed in a gold high-waisted skirt with a beautiful cream and black African print inspired top and Thapelo in a neat double breasted suit.
Host Dlamini opened the night in a pink flowery number, which resembled one of Bonang Matheba’s outfits at the Metro FM Music Awards, but nonetheless Dlamini looked stunning in all four of her wardrobe changes.
As for Lorna Maseko-Lukhele’s Quiteria & George outfit, I’m not too sure.
